Level 1 Structural Engineer – Residential & Field-Based

Location: Memphis, TN (Local Hybrid – significant field time)

Job Overview

OZER Residential Engineering LLC is seeking a field-oriented structural engineer to support residential projects, including homes, houses, and small residential buildings, throughout the Memphis area. This role is hands-on and investigative by nature and centers on understanding how residential structures are built, how they perform over time, and how to provide clear, practical engineering guidance to homeowners.

Engineers in this role regularly work in crawlspaces, attics, basements, rooftops, and active residential construction sites, documenting existing conditions and developing professional recommendations. While some office time is required for calculations, coordination, and documentation, the core of this position is field engagement and client-facing problem solving.

This position is well suited for an early-career structural engineer or EIT who enjoys site work, values clear communication, and wants to build deep experience in residential structural engineering.

Work Environment & Field Culture

Our work is rooted in occupied homes and real construction conditions. Engineers at OZER gain first-hand understanding of structures by working directly in the environments where homeowners live. This includes spending time in warm, humid, dusty, and occasionally tight or unfinished spaces typical of residential buildings.

We view this field exposure as a core part of professional development. Successful engineers in this role are curious, adaptable, and comfortable engaging directly with buildings in their current state, while maintaining professionalism and respect for homeowners and their spaces.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform existing-conditions surveys of residential structures, including houses, additions, garages, and accessory buildings

  • Safely access crawlspaces, attics, roofs, ladders, and residential construction environments

  • Document observations with photos, sketches, measurements, and clear written notes

  • Analyze observed conditions and develop professional engineering opinions and recommendations

  • Write clear, concise engineering reports intended for homeowners, contractors, and permitting authorities

  • Communicate findings and recommendations verbally with homeowners and members of the general public in a courteous, understandable manner

  • Support construction observation and respond to field questions from contractors

  • Translate field findings into calculations, sketches, and drawings as required

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering

  • 0–4 years of experience in residential, construction, inspections, or related engineering work

  • EIT required (or ability to obtain within 6 months)

  • Comfort working in occupied homes, active residential job sites, and confined or unfinished spaces

  • Strong written communication skills, including preparation of client-facing engineering reports

  • Strong verbal communication skills and a professional, service-oriented demeanor

  • Strong observational skills, sound judgment, and attention to detail

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to perform frequent local site visits

Technical Skills (Developing or Proficient)

  • Fundamental understanding of residential structural systems and load paths

  • Familiarity with wood framing, masonry, steel, and concrete

  • Ability to produce or mark up drawings using Revit and/or AutoCAD

  • Use of Bluebeam for document review and field markups

  • Exposure to structural analysis tools (RISA, RAM, ETABS, or similar) is helpful but not required

How We Work

  • Field-forward learning: Regular site visits and hands-on investigation

  • Mentorship-driven: Direct guidance from senior engineers through site visits and design reviews

  • Balanced hybrid model: Field work combined with focused office collaboration

  • Meaningful impact: Helping homeowners make informed decisions about their homes

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive hourly wages salary based on experience

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k) with employer match

  • Paid time off and holidays

  • Support for licensure, exams, and professional development
